What we built

The online gate designer drawing bell-top double composite gates with light grey boards, a black steel frame and spike tops, priced at £3,175 including VAT and fitting

01 · The gate designer

Customers design their gate and see the price

A few quick steps, from material, size and top shape to board colour, frame colour and rail heads. The gate is drawn live as they choose, with a guide price that already includes VAT and fitting. No sign-up and no waiting for a callback. When they send it, the price is worked out again on the server, so nobody can tamper with it.

Workshop report showing order to fitted time, and every job in the workshop with days at its stage against the usual

02 · The workshop

Where every job is, and what is running late

Jobs move from drawing to production, the galvaniser, the powder coater and fitting. Reports show how long each job has sat at its stage against the usual, who is building it, and how long a gate really takes from order to fitted.

Zimmerman, the portal's AI assistant, answering how many jobs were finished last month and which workshop stage is the bottleneck, with the figures blurred

03 · The AI assistant

Ask the business a question, get a straight answer

Zimmerman, the built-in assistant, answers in plain English from the live data: how many jobs were finished last month, which stage is holding the workshop up, what is booked this week, which quotes are still waiting. It can also set jobs up from enquiries, book appointments, move a job to its next stage or add a note, but nothing changes until a person presses Confirm. It never deletes anything, touches money or sends a message by itself.

04 · Editing the website

The team runs their own website

Photos of finished work go straight from the portal to the website. Upload to an album, star the cover, tap the house to make a photo the big one on the home page, add a caption. Reviews, FAQs, towns covered and opening hours work the same way, and every change is live within a minute with no developer involved.

05 · On a tablet

Made for the bench and the van, not an office

The portal is used by a small family team who spend their days in the workshop or out fitting, so it is built for a tablet: big buttons, plain words and the jobs that need someone first, with a call button beside each one.

The Challenge

What needed solving

Newtown Gates & Welding make and fit wrought iron and composite gates across Wigan and the North West. Their Wix website could not price anything, so every quote started with a phone call or a site visit. Each job then passes through drawing, fabrication, the galvaniser, the powder coater and fitting, and the books lived in QuickBooks, apart from the jobs they were paying for. They wanted a website that wins and prices work on its own, and one place to run everything after the customer says yes.

The Solution

How we delivered

We built a new website and a staff portal on one shared .NET 9 API. On the website, customers design their gate step by step, watch it drawn as they go and get a guide price that includes VAT and fitting. Every design lands in the portal ready to turn into a job. From there the portal follows the job through the workshop and out to fitting, on a tablet on the bench or a phone in the van, and it is replacing QuickBooks one piece at a time: invoices, expenses, VAT, wages and card payment links. A built-in assistant answers questions about jobs and money in plain English, and anything the team changes in the portal is live on the website within a minute.
